Deacons:  The Best Kept Secret in the Episcopal Church

Featuring
The Rev. Dr. Joanne Leslie,
Archdeacon of the Diocese of
Los Angeles

Sunday, October 23, 2016
Sweetland Hall

12:30-2:30

What is a Deacon in the Episcopal church?  Who is a Deacon, and what do they do?  And, what is an Archdeacon

Join the Women's Community for a simple lunch of rice and beans, as the Rev. Dr. Joanne leslie clears up the mystery and answers all of your quetions.  In 2011, Joanne was appointed the first female Archdeacon in the episcopal diocese of Los Angeles following a lengthy career in international public health.

As a deacon in Los Angeles, she worked with urban churche to establish innovative nutrition and fitness programs and taught at UCLA's School of Public Health.  "My work in public health was a ministry long before I recognized it as such," she says.

Joanne will share her experience with maternal and child malnutrition issues in sub-Saharan Africa and efforts to reduce health inequalities in underserved communities of Los Angeles.  In addition, she will share her vision of the critical role  that deacons play in the contemporary church, and we will hear about the incredible breadth of ministries of the fifty deacons who currently serve our diocese.   She will clarify how the call to be a deacon is different than the call to the priesthood and to lay leadership.

This progam is open to all.  $15.00 entrance fee is payable at the door and includes lunch and program.

All profits from this program will be donated to Community Health Councils of Los Angeles, a non profit, community-based health promotion and policy organization based in Los Angeles.   You can read more about CHC by CLICKING HERE.

Voices from the Heart Brunch 2016
honoring
Gary Leonard and Chris and Sheila Mackey-Mason

Sunday, June 12, 2016

We thoroughly Enjoyed the stories behind our beautiful Altar Flowers and the spiritual journey of those who create them.  Plus we had a fantastic demonstration of how to create three different styles of floral arrangements.

Later in the summer, Women's Community joined once again with Gary to provide a hands on workshop on flower arranging.  The event was enjoyed by all, and we all took home beautiful arrangements that we made ourselves!

Flower Arranging Workshop with Gary Leonard - August 29, 2016

We are presenting this workshop by popular demand, as a hands on follow-up to the successful Women's Community voices from the Heart Program in June.  Each student participated by creating their own long low arrangement, as well as a glass vase arrangement.

Music and Faith:  Variations on a Theme II
honoring
Zanaida Robles and Elizabeth Tatum

All Saints On Sweetland Hall was electric on Sunday, June 14th when chorus soloists, Elizabeth Tatum and Zanaida Robles shared their faith journey and love of music.  It was so enlightening to learn about the inspiration that music has contributed to their lives.  It was a fantastic day with good food, wine, and this amazing program!!   After each artist told their story, they presented us with a beautiful Mini-Concert which included Moses Hogan's "Deep River," Mozart's "Sull' Aria," Farrell's "Peace on Earth," and Leo Delibes' "Flower Duet."  A question and answer period, followed by multiple standing ovations finished off the enlightening and entertaining program.
